Children’s Nutrition: How to Fight Flu Season

With our children now fully immersed back into the school year, our days as parents aren’t just met with busy schedules and preparations, but the ongoing battle of preventing illnesses from entering into our homes. There’s no better time to focus on the safeguarding of our children’s health than now, with Flu season in full effect, especially with the approaching holidays.

At Montana Apothecary and Co. we understand that our health is largely based on a blend of nutritional factors, and this absolutely applies to our children as well. Nowhere are the adverse effects of the Standard American Diet more apparent than in the current nutritional status of our country’s children. Poor nutritional intake can begin in the womb, and diets of high in processed food, high in sugar and fat, while also being low in fiber has caused a generation of children to be deficient in essential vitamins, minerals and fatty acids.

DHA Levels Support Learning and Cognitive Function

Because our children are developing and growing, we as parents need to focus on supporting their health so they avoid long-term health issues because of poor nutrition. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is the most essential fatty acid in our brains and is key for a normal, healthy brain structure and function.

Studies in children have shown that higher DHA levels support learning and cognitive function, and these results translate to adolescents as well. Given the high-fat diet that most children consume in our country, supplementing DHA in the range of 400-600mg daily is recommended for most children.
